The Annual Retreat is one the most valuable meetings that a board member or an Executive Director attends each year. It is the time when everyone gathers together to reconnect to the mission of the organization and to each other. It is the one best opportunity to unite everyone and to synchronize goals and objectives. It is a way of providing the unique combination of clear vision and energy.
This statement is the philosophy behind James P. Reber as a retreat facilitator. As a facilitator, Mr. Reber brings his experience as a retreat participant, combined with facilitation training (part of it through the Wharton Effective Executive Program), and the cumulative knowledge of having conducted retreats over time. Again, the practical use of retreat is the emphasis.
Everything in the retreat needs to be focused on uniting everyone in purpose and action. Cute, embarrassing exercises are nice for some situations, but not at the expense of having a purposeful, productive retreat.
I want board members not only informed, but inspired, says Mr. Reber. And a properly conducted retreat should make everyone feel engaged, comfortable, and inspired when they leave! This is always my goal.
