Organizational Development
Organizations go through phases, some related to growth, some related to the age of the organization. Nonprofit organizations have very specific patterns of growth, due to their unique structures.

Newly-formed nonprofit organizations often have no professional staff and a small board. The board is not an oversight body, but a hands-on working group of volunteers. As the organization grows, however, professional staff are brought in and the role of the board must change. As much work as possible should be given to the professional staff and the board must step back into oversight, dealing more with policy and long-term planning. Some functions, such as accounting, may remain a function of a member of the board.

Fully mature nonprofit organizations have professional staff to do everything. But because the need for funding is often much greater, especially contributed income, the board may have some members (i.e., the President and executive Committee) for whom their work is a veritable unpaid part-time job. But the work is board tasks, and not for the day-to-day business of the organization.

James P. Reber offers consulting in the area of Organizational Development to help through these transitions and to help an organization understand what are the proper roles and to assist in helping each unique organization move forward in times of transition.
