A Capital Campaign is a very unique form of fundraising, unlike most others (except for Special Project Fundraising) in that it generally involves a one-time gift by each donor. That gift is likely to be a very large amount, many times more than the annual giving that a donor provides. It is this unique, once-in-a-lifetime nature of a Capital Campaign that requires a very high standard of care by any campaign consultant.

James P. Reber provides Capital Campaigns on a limited basis, based on familiarity with the organization, the cause it espouses, and the community from which it seeks to raise Capital gifts. Previous experience dictates that this kind of work be approached with several things in mind. First of all is the time commitment to the campaign. Second is the environment of the Capital Campaign, which includes board support, organizational stature in the community, and the basic fundraising record of the organization.

Generally, a Feasibility Study will be done first. In some cases, an organization may require that an independent agency do that part. James P. Reber is able to do both the feasibility study and the Capital Campaign. The Feasibility Study examines the potential of the community to give. A survey is taken among community leaders and likely donors to test the waters of prospective giving.

This survey may provide a basic green light, red light for the campaign. But more than that, this survey provides recommendations for how to approach the community, what positions to take, what perceived problems need to be addressed, etc. Finally, the Capital Campaign requires the securing of a lead gift or lead gifts that provide a substantial boost to the campaign and creates a feeling in the community, especially among donors that this Capital Campaign will succeed. In addition to securing a lead gift, the Capital Campaign must have an engaged, involved Chair and Campaign Committee, for which Mr. Reber and his Associates will provide leadership and guidance through to the final funds raised.

Special Project Fundraising is very similar to Capital Fundraising. It tends to be for an extraordinary project or program or piece of equipment important to the organization and one that requires a special campaign to raise the funds.
